Standing Stone State Park hosted its first B.A.R.K. Ranger program of 2025 on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Recreation Hall. Despite the chilly weather, a group of enthusiastic dogs and their owners braved the cold to participate in the educational and fun program.
Led by Park Ranger Stephanie Howick, the program focused on teaching responsible pet ownership in the park environment. The session began with introductions and an explanation of the "B.A.R.K." acronym, which stands for: Bag your pet's waste, Always leash your pet , Respect wildlife, and Know where you can go
Participants then embarked on a short walk, putting into practice some of the B.A.R.K. principles. Back at the Recreation Hall, the newly inducted rangers recited the B.A.R.K. Ranger pledge, promising to uphold the rules and protect the park. Each dog received an official B.A.R.K. Ranger goodie bag, complete with a collar tag, a stylish bandana-collar combo, exclusive stickers, and other surprises.
The first graduates of the 2025 B.A.R.K. Ranger program are Bella Hicks, Bubba, Daisy, Hank Hooks and Theo Larsen
Ranger Howick emphasized the importance of the B.A.R.K. Ranger program in preserving the natural beauty of Standing Stone State Park. "By educating pet owners about responsible recreation, we can ensure that the park remains a safe and enjoyable place for both people and animals," she said.
The program highlighted the specific requirements for participating in the B.A.R.K. Ranger program, which include being able to leash and control your pet, recognize and address fearful or aggressive behavior, and being prepared for outdoor conditions.
Standing Stone State Park encourages visitors to bring their furry friends and become a part of the B.A.R.K. Ranger program. Those interested in attending future sessions can pre-register online or by calling the park office. All dogs must be leashed in accordance with park and B.A.R.K. rules.
