Overton County is experiencing significant development near the Upper Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation (UCEMC) Monroe substation, off Byrdstown Highway. A 4.75 MW, 109-acre solar farm is currently under construction, and site preparation has begun for a data center located across the road.
UCEMC emphasizes its commitment to members' interests as these projects progress. "At UCEMC, we take a cautious and thorough approach when evaluating new projects that could impact our system and our members,” stated a UCEMC representative.
The solar farm, owned by Silicon Ranch, is slated for completion in June 2025. The data center across the road is projected to be operational in Summer 2025. While UCEMC does not own or operate either facility, the cooperative has been actively involved in discussions to ensure alignment with its member-first mission.
In a historic move, UCEMC will purchase power from the new Silicon Ranch solar farm. This marks the first time UCEMC will source electricity from an entity other than TVA, a significant shift aimed at potentially offsetting rising power costs due to the lower cost of solar power compared to traditional TVA rates. While solar power will supplement rather than replace traditional sources, it underscores UCEMC's commitment to reliable and affordable service.
A key benefit for UCEMC members is the data center's flexible power supply. During peak energy demand and TVA-requested power reductions, the data center's power can be reduced or interrupted, allowing UCEMC to prioritize residential and essential services and maintain system reliability without burdening its members.
Beyond the electric system, these developments are expected to bring economic benefits to the local community through job creation and contributions to the local tax base, supporting essential public services. UCEMC will continue to monitor these projects to ensure positive impacts for its members and the community while maintaining reliable and affordable electricity.
UCEMC will provide further updates as these projects advance and encourages members with questions to reach out.
